This page describes common usage scenarios for Group Policy:
Configure The Operating System and Applications
Reduce the user "futz" factor by configuring components centrally. This can significantly reduce support costs.
Implement consistent characteristics across machines - screen saver, desktop, etc. Again, this directly impacts support costs.
Invoke machine and/or user scripts - startup/shutdown and logon/logoff.
Enhance Security
Configure specific aspects if the operating system to reduce security risks - enforce the Windows Firewall, open acceptable ports, constrain the use of IE plug-ins, etc
Manage the Automatic Update client (against either Windows Update or a SUS/WUS server)
Implement restrictions on which software can be run (Software Restrictions Policy)
Install Software
Assign applications to machines or users
Advertise applications to users (make available in Add/Remove Programs)
