IE Maintenance

This page describes issues related to the management of Internet Explorer through Group Policy.

Group Policy supports the administration and customization of Microsoft Internet Explorer on computers running Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003.

Settings for the following features can be customized using Group Policy.

Browser User Interface

Settings for the user interface and the appearance of the browser are available for the following areas:

  • Browser Title
  • Custom Logo and Animated Bitmaps
  • Toolbar Customization (toolbar background and toolbar buttons)

Connection Settings

Settings for the presetting and control of the user's connection settings, such as dial-up and local area network (LAN) connections, are available for the following areas:

  • Connection Settings
  • Automatic Browser Configuration
  • Proxy Settings
  • User Agent String

Custom URLs

Settings for specifying the URLs that appear on users' browsers, such as the Home page, Search page, and customized Favorites and Links, are available for the following options:

  • Favorites and Links
  • Important URLs

Security

Settings for specifying presetting and controlling user security settings, such as security zones, privacy settings, and content ratings, are available for the following areas:

  • Security Zones and Content Ratings
  • Authenticode Settings

Program Associations

Settings for specifying which Internet programs are used by default for common Internet tasks, such as reading e-mail or viewing newsgroups, are available in the following area:

  • Programs
Consideration for Windows XP Service Pack 2
PC's with Windows XP Service Pack 2 applied will not apply Internet Explorer Maintenance settings if Folder Redirection settings are also applied. See Microsoft Knowledge Base article # 888254 for more information. This is article is somewhat confusing in that it states (as of the January 28, 2005 revision):

"You cannot set the Folder Redirection policy setting on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that also uses Group Policy settings to customize Microsoft Internet Explorer."

In fact, the Folder Redirection settings are applied correctly, but the Internet Explorer Maintenance settings are ignored.

Hi guys,

I would like to know anybody can share how I can manage RSS feed of the IE 7 from GPO.

Thanks.

You can also apply Internet Explorer settings with Desktop Authority. You can easily set proxy server or url for auto config script, home page, default download directory. All this settings can be applied to certain users with Validation Logic. You can use DA for folder redirection also without any issues.

Help pls. I need to add few important links to all users in my organization. i have created a policy and in internet explorere maintanence mode and applied to a test OU, but the changes are not reflecting on the client IE. Our domain having a default domain policy in enforced mode and no IE settings were made on this domain policy. it seems the test policy is applying because other changes made on this policy to user settings are reflecting except IE settings.

Please help me, thanks

Hello all,

I'm have the same problem. On a Windows 2000 PC I can edit a GPO and under Users\Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance I get Zone settings that I want to configure. When editing the same GPO from an XP client PC the Internet Explorer Maintenance node does not appear. Does anybody know how I can get the node displayed (I think it was there the first time I edited the GPO on the XP machine)

Many thanks

Howard

If you select "preference mode" of "internet explorer maintenance" you get another selection of "advanced".  This gives us a whole slew of new options.  Very useful but I'm looking for more info on this setting.

Roger: The Microsoft article is, as far as I can tell, flawed. See my postings in this thread: http://x220.win2ktest.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=11178&whichpage=1

Basically, I was able to make the hotfix work reliably after doing some spying on it w/ SysInternals RegMon.

We have been holding off deploying SP2 for some time due to this bug.  Unfortunately this fix doesn't have the desired effect for us.  Also note there's an error in the KB article, references to "IEXPLORER.EXE" should of course read "iexplore.exe"

From gpoguy - 2/10/05 9:55 AM

In the original threads on this bug in the newsgroups, it only applied if you were using Application Data Folder Redirection with IE Maintenance, and no, it did not require them to be in the same GPO to see the bug.

A comment about KB 888254.  On my network I am using GP to redirect the My Documents folder.  I also have a separate GP that sets Internet Explorer Maintenance settings, specifically Home Page URL and custom Trusted sites security level.  Both of these policies appear to work properly.  We do on occasion have a failure with the redirection but not on the IE Maintenance portion.  Does the article apply only if both settings are in the same GPO?
