GP Troubleshooting

For general troubleshooting guidance (including a structured flowchart for use in collaboration with GPMC), see the Group Policy Troubleshooting Whitepaper. For more granular troubleshooting...

Application Templates

Problem: I added a custom ADM file but don't see the policy settings it contains in GPEdit.
Solution: Does your custom ADM file contain preferences (not "true policies")? If so, select Administrative Templates in GPEdit, then select the View, Filtering menu and deselect the "Only show policy settings that can be fully managed" check box. This ensures that preferences are displayed in GPEdit.

Group Policy and Terminal Server

Problem: How do I enforce "User" Group Policy settings for those logging onto a Terminal Server session?
Solution: This requires setting the "Loopback" Group Policy setting for those Terminal Server machines.  The setting is located in Administrative Templates/System/Group Policy and is called "User Group Policy loopback processing mode".  Select the mode "Merge" or "Replace" based on your needs for the particular Terminal Server.
